February 4, 2025
Good morning!
The hunt continues :)
πTodayβs Clue: It's a place to play and make new friends, east of the stormwater pond, where the train tracks bend.
π Day 3: Lawrence-Gregory Community Center
π΅π½ Clue: Tucked away and on a hill, find the community spot known for its sporty activities that always give kids a thrill! πΌπ
The Lawrence-Gregory Community Center opened in 1959 as a segregated facility built for Black residents in Griffin Heights and surrounding communities. Leon County and the City of Tallahassee built the facility for $81,626 (present-day $800,000) and allowed residents to use it for no charge. The Center became known as a popular hang-out spot, where children could enjoy roller skating parties and other recreational activities.
The Center is still open and hosts a Summer Camp every year. The Center was renamed in 2002 in honor of Mr. James Lawrence, retired Recreation Superintendent, and Beulah Gregory, the first Supervisor of the facility.
See you tomorrow,
