February 28, 2025
Good morning! Itβs the last day of Black History Month and the scavenger hunt! Thanks to everyone who participated in this little fun quest to explore Black History and lightly interrogate what the future of Black progress looks like.
Please share your reflections from this past month and any thoughts that the question What does the future of Black progress look like sparked!
Hopefully, Iβll have a chance to share some reflections soon. But for now, Iβm in desperate need of a nap. This past week has been incredibly busy!
Talk soon and enjoy your weekend,
Shelby
π Day 22: Pat Wee Kindergarten and Nursery
π΅π½ Clue: βNow a vacant lot owned by the City, find the former site of this nursery."
For decades, the Pat Wee Nursery and Kindergarten sat at 431 West Virginia Street in Frenchtown. Patseylee Payne owned the nursery, and her sister, Anne Louis Tanner, or "Mama Tanner," managed it to "help the child's whole body, whole self... grow and develop."
The site changed hands a few times, becoming a Head Start Center and an extension of a homeless shelter, before eventually being acquired by the City of Tallahassee for redevelopment purposes, which has kept the site vacant for nearly 10 years.
