Have you or someone you know lost power or water this Summer due to a disconnection? If so, you’re not alone. Florida is one of 27 states that allows utility companies to shut off customers for non-payment, even in a heat wave. Because of this, hundreds of thousands of Floridians are left without essential services amidst life-threatening extreme heat.
If this has happened to you, please consider sharing your experience.
I’m an energy researcher working on a story about how disconnections during extreme heat are impacting Americans and how some customers are trying to make these disconnections illegal. Stories are a powerful tool to detail the harmful practices utilities currently employ to protect their revenue stream.
