Hi everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend.
I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things, but below are some updates on my personal life, the election analysis, November elections, and local news.
Election Analysis
I started analyzing the voter data from the 2022 Primary Elections.
This shouldn't shock anyone, but Baby Boomers yield the most political power in Tallahassee by making up almost 38% of the voting population:
But, what's interesting, is that Gen Z + Millennials almost outvoted Gen X. However, and this is speculative, Gen Z + Millenials don't hold nearly as much political power or sway over our City Commission as Gen X.
For anyone curious, the sole voter in the Lost Generation is 108 years old!
Life Update
I've gotten a lot of questions about what's next for me and my political career.
For now, the plan is to rest and continue organizing — mainly around safe streets, utility shutoffs, and housing. When there are calls for action, I will send out messages so others can get involved!
I'm also preparing for law school! I’ll be applying this cycle to a handful of schools. If you have advice or recommendations, please share! I'm very interested in learning more about utilities, energy markets, public interest, tech <> antitrust, and regulation.
November Elections
In a little over a month, we'll start voting to decide who should lead our City, County, and State.
Early Voting starts Monday, October 24th and ends November 6th. View a sample ballot to explore the different races and candidates.
Local News
- Our City Commissioners will finalize our $1 Billion budget for the next fiscal year (2023) this Wednesday. The budget hearing will be preceded by a standard City Commission meeting. View the agenda here.
- Serenity, a local café and community space, closed down due to a labor strike and rising costs. Now ex-employees are raising funds to cover lost wages.
- Utility customers in neighboring Quincy received a $100 credit on their bill, thanks to their City Commissioners using funds from the American Rescue Plan. Something I would love to see our City replicate.
I plan to keep using this newsletter as an outlet to share information, ideas, and my thoughts on local/statewide politics. I’ll eventually get around to changing the name and branding, but I’m in no rush. I hope this was informative!
Have a nice week,
Shelby
